<summary type="text">Caribbean and Pacific symptomatic duality due to ciguatera poisoning; Dualidad sintomática entre Caribe y Pacífico por intoxicación con ciguatera
Ciguatera is known as poisoning by different species of dinoflagellates, which is acquired by ingesting poisonous fish contaminated with the ichthyotoxin known as ciguatoxin, considered endemic in tropical and subtropical countries, with the most frequent cases found in the South Pacific islands and the Caribbean Sea. In the different reports, it has been observed that the regional origin of the toxin correlates with the clinical manifestations, with gastrointestinal manifestations being more frequent in the Caribbean and neurological manifestations in the Pacific. Therefore, this review aims to describe the relationship between geographic location and the appearance of symptoms in ciguatera poisoning. A review of the literature available in the last two decades was carried out, including review articles and case reports. Twelve reports were analyzed, ten of them in the Caribbean and two in the Pacific, and it was found that there is a relationship between the clinical picture and the geographical location, since gastrointestinal, osteomyoarticular and neurological symptoms were documented in the Caribbean, while neurological symptoms predominated in the Pacific. It is concluded that the clinical manifestations of this intoxication vary according to geographical location, probably due to the structural differences of the ciguatoxin involved, and that it is a disease that has not had a good epidemiological control that would allow a massive data collection for its control.; La ciguatera es conocida como la intoxicación por distintas especies de dinoflagelados, la cual se adquiere al ingerir peces venenosos que están contaminados con la ictiotoxina conocida como ciguatoxina, considerada como endémica en los países tropicales y subtropicales, encontrándose casos con mayor frecuencia en las islas del Pacífico Sur y el mar Caribe.
