| dc.description | In the Andean tropics, natural forests are experiencing a high rate of fragmentation, which, together with climate change, threatens the sustainability of these ecosystems. In the province of García Rovira, oak forests dominated by Quercus humboldtii are additionally affected by Stigmacoccus asper, a Hemipteran insect that lives inside the tree and produces a sugary substance known as honeydew, which is consumed by wildlife. However, the fauna species that feed on this resource are not well known. In this study, conducted at three sites, fixed-radius point counts and camera traps were used to identify the fauna species that consume honeydew. To obtain floristic and structural information, four circular plots of 500 m² were established at each site. Forest density, the percentage of trees infested by S. asper, insect density, and the percentage of fumagine infestation were quantified. A total of 1356 individuals belonging to 57 species (53 birds, three mammals, and one insect) were recorded, of which 35 were documented feeding on honeydew. Both richness and abundance of fauna were higher in the morning, as was honeydew consumption. This study highlights the importance of honeydew as a food source for wildlife, particularly hummingbirds. Conserving forest relics where honeydew is present is essential, as these habitats provide ecosystem services such as maintaining biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and hydrological regulation, while also offering a crucial food resource for numerous species. | en-US |
