| dc.description | Background: Breast and prostate cancer are the most prevalent oncological diseases worldwide. Long-term supervision by oncology services within a fragmented healthcare system represents a barrier to patient care. Primary care serves as the gateway to the healthcare system, yet the role of family physicians in oncology care remains notably absent. Objectives: To describe therole of family medicine specialists in the care of breast and prostate cancer patients, focusing on screening, healthcare provision, and cancer survivorship. Methodology: This systematic review was conducted using databases such as PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and LILACS, covering studies from 2004 to 2024. Data collection followed the PRISMA strategy. Results: Many women and men prefer their family physician for cancer screening and follow-up, expressing satisfaction despite the limitations of healthcare systems. However, while family physicians feel confident in their decision-makingabilities, they face challenges in communicating with oncology specialists. This lack of coordination can negatively impact screening quality and survivorship care. Conclusion: Family physicians play an integral role in the care of breast and prostate cancer patients. It is crucial to address screening barriers, improve communication, and enhance training and available resources. Future studies should focus on interventions that optimize oncology care. | |
