This essays attempts to carry out a clarification regarding the importance of teaching English at university level in Colombia, through a literature review a short explanation of the traditional methods for the teaching of English was done and also a critic about them was presented as well, subsequently the guidelines for the creation of an alternative curriculum for the teaching of English at university level were presented. The previously mentioned guidelines made emphasis on the fact that the curriculum should be based on the communicative approach and also that it can go hand on hand with the application of English with specific purposes, which would strengthen not only the learning process of the target language, but also the performance students will have in their future profession. Those guidelines also made emphasis on the application of the Multiple Intelligences theory in order to carry out the different class activities, and also taking into account the use of authentic material and the information and communication technologies as elements that would improve the teaching and learning practices inside and outside the classroom.
