Introduction: Evidence suggests that mortality in the management of intertrochanteric hip fractures increases when there is delay in surgical management, so that today there is a consensus perform surgery early. The aim of this study is to establish the possible impact on morbidity and mortality reducing the time to be taken to surgery patients within 48 hours. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study reviewed the medical records and telephone survey of intertrochanteric fracture patients operated on between 2007 and 2013. Survival analysis with Kaplan Meier method and numerical variables was performed T student test and chi square test was performed to variables nominal. Results: Of the 140 patients who met the criteria for inclusion and exclusion, 34 patients were operated on within 48 hours and 106 patients after the first 48 hours, the average number of hours between the patient's admission to the completion of surgery was 120 hours. The mortality at 6 months in the early surgery group (less than 48 hours) was 2.9% and in the late surgery group (over 48 hours) was 15.1% (p = 0.02). The hospital stay decreased 5 days on average in patients operated within 48 hours (p = 0.008). Conclusions: There are far lower mortality at 6 months and decreased postoperative hospital stay in patients undergoing early; no difference in mortality at one year compared groups was obtained
